Initial impressions of "Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens.|
"Michigan" was one of my favorite albums of 2003 and I was waiting with anticipation for Illinois to drop. I've had it for a few days now, listened to it several times through and, although I can by no means give definitive comments, I'm ready to say a few things.
Illinois almost seems like it could have been recorded along with Michigan, as the songs have a very similar feel to them. This similarity is sometimes comforting or effective and other times off-putting as some of the melodies seem to be derivative or dumbed down versions of ones from Michigan (This manifests itself most strongly to me in some bland lyrics and melodies in a few of the songs). It works other times when a new song starts by building steam from a song on "M" and then goes off on its own fantastic direction. There are some great melodies peppered about, but, as of now, I don't feel it's as strong as "M." It fills up a whole CD and has 20+ songs, so it's going to take a while to digest it all. I am still excited about it though, so that's a good sign.
